‘Aaqib Nabi Should Have Been in the Squad Earlier, Not Just as a Replacement’: Wasim Jaffer on India’s Selection Decision

New Delhi

Former India opener Wasim Jaffer has shared his views on the selection of young fast bowler Aaqib Nabi for India’s tour of Sri Lanka. Jaffer believes that Nabi should not have been picked merely as a replacement following Jasprit Bumrah’s injury, but should have already been part of the national squad based on his consistent performances in domestic cricket.

Aaqib Nabi has impressed with his performances in India’s domestic circuit over the past few seasons. Representing Jammu & Kashmir, the right-arm pacer has earned praise for his pace, discipline, and consistent wicket-taking ability, attracting the attention of cricket experts and selectors alike. Many had already identified him as a strong contender for a place in the Indian team.

After Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out due to injury, the selectors included Aaqib Nabi in the squad for the Sri Lanka tour. However, Wasim Jaffer believes the young pacer deserved his opportunity on merit rather than as an injury replacement.

Jaffer said that players who consistently perform well in domestic cricket should be rewarded with timely opportunities at the international level. According to him, such selections not only boost the confidence of deserving players but also motivate others in the domestic circuit to continue performing at a high level.

The former Indian batter added that he is pleased Aaqib Nabi has finally earned a place in the national team. He believes the young fast bowler now has an excellent opportunity to showcase his talent and prove himself on the international stage.

India’s squad for the Sri Lanka tour features several young and emerging cricketers, making the series an important platform for new talent. Cricket fans and selectors will closely watch Aaqib Nabi’s performances, and if he earns a place in the playing XI, it could mark the beginning of a promising international career.

Cricket experts believe that rewarding consistent domestic performers with opportunities in the national team is essential for the long-term success of Indian cricket. In that context, Aaqib Nabi’s selection is being viewed as a positive step toward strengthening India’s future talent pipeline.
