Custodial Death Row Escalates in Tamil Nadu, DMK Questions CM Vijay: ‘Why the Silence?’
The alleged custodial death of a differently-abled man has intensified political tensions in Tamil Nadu, with the DMK demanding an explanation from Chief Minister Vijay and calling for accountability.

Political tensions have intensified in Tamil Nadu following the alleged custodial death of a 35-year-old differently-abled man. The incident has sparked widespread criticism, with the opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) questioning Chief Minister Vijay over the government’s response and demanding an immediate public explanation.
According to police officials, the man was detained on July 9 in connection with a theft investigation. Family members allege that he was subjected to severe physical assault while in police custody. They claim his body bore multiple injury marks, raising serious concerns over the circumstances leading to his death.
Preliminary reports indicate that the victim sustained several injuries, including visible wounds on different parts of the body. Following the incident, authorities registered a case and arrested three jail officials, including a prison warden, as part of the ongoing investigation.
The issue has quickly turned into a major political controversy. DMK leaders referred to earlier statements made by Chief Minister Vijay regarding custodial violence and questioned why the government had not issued a detailed response. Party leaders asked, “Where is your promise now?”, demanding accountability from the state administration.
Senior DMK leader and Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin also called for a clear explanation from the Chief Minister, stating that the Home Department falls under the Chief Minister’s responsibility. Other opposition leaders echoed similar demands, insisting that justice be delivered to the victim’s family.
Police officials have stated that the investigation is continuing and that all aspects of the case are being examined. Authorities said that further legal action will be based on the findings of the post-mortem examination, forensic evidence, and other material collected during the investigation.
The case has become one of the most closely watched political and human rights issues in Tamil Nadu. While the victim’s family continues to seek strict action against those responsible, opposition parties are pressing the government for greater transparency and accountability.
