For many people, the law appears complicated, expensive and difficult to understand. Advocate and Author Nikhil Chugh believes that this perception can only change when legal education reaches beyond courtrooms and becomes part of everyday life. His work is driven by a simple idea—that every citizen should have the knowledge needed to understand their legal rights and responsibilities.
Born in Panipat, Haryana, on 23 August 1999, Nikhil Chugh is an Indian advocate, legal educator and author, and a member of the Supreme Court Bar Association. Through his legal practice, writing, research and public awareness initiatives, he continues to work towards making legal literacy accessible to every citizen. While actively practising law, he has simultaneously devoted himself to public legal education, encouraging citizens to become aware of the legal protections available to them under the Constitution and other laws.
One of the key milestones in this journey has been the publication of his book, “Legal Rights Every Citizen Must Know: FIR, Bail and Police Procedure Under India’s New Criminal Laws (BNSS 2023).” Written in a practical and reader-friendly style, the book explains important legal procedures introduced under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. It covers subjects including FIR registration, arrest, bail, police investigation and procedural safeguards, with the objective of helping citizens understand the legal process before they find themselves in difficult situations. The book has been made available on major digital publishing platforms so that readers across India and abroad can access it with ease.
Beyond authorship, Chugh has consistently promoted legal awareness through educational articles, public interactions and digital platforms. His awareness initiatives focus on explaining legal developments in simple language so that students, young professionals and ordinary citizens can better understand the practical application of the law. Rather than limiting legal discussions to technical audiences, he believes legal literacy should become a part of everyday civic education.
Alongside his legal practice, Nikhil Chugh is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Law, where his research examines the constitutional protection of gig and contractual workers. His work explores issues relating to labour rights, social security and constitutional safeguards for workers engaged in emerging forms of employment. Through this research, he aims to contribute to meaningful academic discussion and policy development concerning one of India’s fastest-growing segments of the workforce.
His legal awareness mission extends beyond writing books and conducting research. Chugh envisions campaigns that encourage citizens to understand their constitutional rights, legal remedies and civic responsibilities before legal disputes arise. He believes that preventive legal education is just as important as legal representation, because informed citizens are often better equipped to avoid exploitation and protect their rights.
Looking ahead, his vision is to build a stronger culture of legal literacy in India through publications, research, public awareness campaigns and educational initiatives. He hopes to develop practical legal resources that simplify complex legislation without compromising legal accuracy, making the law more approachable for people from every section of society.
Speaking about his mission, Nikhil Chugh says that legal knowledge should never remain the privilege of a few. According to him, every individual—regardless of profession, education or background—deserves to understand the rights guaranteed by law. He believes that a legally informed society is not only better prepared to seek justice but is also more capable of strengthening democracy, promoting constitutional values and encouraging responsible citizenship.
His message to citizens is straightforward: learn the law before you need the law. Understanding basic legal rights, constitutional protections and civic responsibilities can empower individuals, prevent unnecessary disputes and contribute to a more aware, responsible and just society. Through advocacy, research, authorship and legal awareness initiatives, Advocate and Author Nikhil Chugh continues to work towards that goal.
