Jamia Millia Islamia University has announced that regular classes will restart from November 10, following the end of a student hunger strike that began on October 12. The university administration also confirmed that the second mid-term examinations will be held offline starting November 16. This marks a return to normal academic activities after weeks of disruptions linked to demands for reinstating the student union elections.
Online Classes to End by November 9
Amid the student protests and hunger strike over the reinstatement of student union elections, Jamia initially switched to online classes set to continue until November 24. However, the administration has revised this plan, announcing that online classes will run only until November 9. From November 10 onward, the university will reopen for in-person sessions as the situation stabilizes.
The student strike forced a halt to normal academic operations, prompting the shift to virtual learning. The university’s decision to resume offline activities reflects an easing of tensions and a commitment to progressing with the academic calendar for the 2026-2027 session.
Mid-Term Exams Scheduled November 16-21
The university registrar released a statement confirming that the second mid-term examinations will be conducted in offline mode between November 16 and November 21. This aligns with the academic calendar for the current session. Additionally, all other academic events related to student activities will also be held offline from this period onward.
The announcement provides clarity after a period of uncertainty caused by the prolonged student agitation. It underscores the administration’s plan to restore order and ensure that academic assessments proceed without further delays.
Student unrest began when demands were made to reinstate the student union elections, which had been suspended. Despite initial assurances, the lack of a clear election schedule led to the hunger strike, causing significant disruption on campus and prompting administrative action.
On October 29, Jamia issued a directive indicating the student union elections will be held within six weeks after the academic session begins on July 15. This suggests the elections will likely take place in August 2027, offering a timeline that helped end the 18-day hunger strike by the protesting students.
The developments mark a turning point, aiming to balance student demands with the university’s academic priorities. Resuming offline classes and scheduling exams are crucial steps toward restoring normalcy and ensuring students can continue their education without further interruption.
