The Bihar Legislative Council election results for eight seats held on October 23 have been declared, revealing significant political shifts. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured three seats, while Janata Dal United (JDU) and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) each claimed one seat. Jan Suraj Party made a notable debut by winning the Darbhanga Teacher constituency. Two independent candidates also emerged victorious, marking an intriguing election outcome.
Teacher Constituency Wins Highlight New Political Players
Jan Suraj’s win in Darbhanga Teacher constituency stands out, especially as it challenges the BJP’s stronghold led by state president Sanjay Sarawagi. Jan Suraj’s Suresh Prasad Rai defeated Congress senior leader Dr. Madan Mohan Jha, signaling the party’s rising influence in teacher electorates. This victory follows Jan Suraj’s earlier breakthrough in the Bankipur assembly by-election.
All four teacher constituencies elected new faces this cycle. Dr. Sanjeev Kumar of RJD claimed the Patna Teacher seat by defeating BJP’s five-term incumbent Maval Kishore Yadav, shaking up established political expectations. BJP’s Narendra Prasad Singh won the Tirhut Teacher seat. The Saran Teacher constituency saw independent candidate Rahul Raj defeat JDU’s Anand Pushkar, highlighting strong performances by non-party candidates.
Graduate Constituencies Favor Incumbents
In contrast to teacher seats, the four graduate constituencies largely favored sitting members. JDU’s Neeraj Kumar triumphed over RJD’s Dilip Kumar in Patna Graduate constituency, with Jan Suraj’s candidate Anuj Singh finishing third. Independent Banshidhar Brajwasi won Tirhut Graduate again, defeating JDU’s Abhishek Jha for the second consecutive time.
BJP’s Sarvesh Kumar secured another term in Darbhanga Graduate constituency. Dr. N.K. Yadav of BJP achieved a third consecutive victory in Kosi Graduate seat. This outcome confirms sustained voter confidence in experienced representatives in graduate constituencies despite changing tides in teacher seats.
Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary extended congratulations and best wishes to all winning candidates via social media platform X. He praised Neeraj Kumar’s win in Patna Graduate seat as a reflection of voter trust in the NDA alliance. The Chief Minister also commended BJP’s Dr. N.K. Yadav and Narendra Singh for their respective victories in Kosi Graduate and Tirhut Teacher constituencies.
Chaudhary additionally appreciated independent Banshidhar Brajwasi, Jan Suraj’s Suresh Prasad Rai, independent Rahul Raj, and RJD’s Dr. Sanjeev Kumar for their successes. He expressed expectations that the elected council members will actively safeguard teacher interests, uphold dignity, and contribute to educational advancement.
The election results signify political diversity in Bihar’s Legislative Council. BJP’s three-seat win is the highest among parties, but the entry of Jan Suraj in teacher seats and victories of independent candidates show competitive dynamics among traditional and emerging forces.
Overall, the mix of fresh faces, incumbents, and independents across different constituencies highlights evolving voter preferences and the complex political landscape in Bihar.
