Serious questions have once again been raised over the safety and security of women and girls in the country. According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), cases of rape involving girls below the age of 18 have increased significantly over the past decade. In 2015, 10,934 such cases were registered, while the number rose to 43,675 in 2024.
According to the data, nearly 1.83 lakh cases of rape involving minor girls were registered between 2020 and 2024. Adolescent girls between the ages of 16 and 18 were the most affected, with 94,503 cases reported in this age group. Meanwhile, 70,442 cases involved girls between 12 and 16 years of age.
Cases registered under the POCSO Act include various sexual offences in addition to rape. Between 2020 and 2024, a total of 96,505 cases of sexual harassment were reported. There were also 12,807 cases related to molestation, 2,924 cases involving the use of children for pornographic purposes, and 3,034 cases recorded under other categories.
The most concerning aspect is the rate at which these cases are being resolved. According to the available data, the conviction rate in rape cases involving minor girls was around 30 percent in 2024, while approximately 86 percent of cases were pending before the courts.
NCRB data also indicates that in most cases, the accused was known to the victim. In 2024, nearly 97 percent of the accused were identified as acquaintances, relatives, neighbours, friends, or individuals who had allegedly promised marriage.
These figures not only highlight the seriousness of crimes against children but also underline the urgent need to speed up investigations and judicial proceedings to ensure timely justice for victims.
