The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested former West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services Minister Sujit Basu in connection with the alleged South Dumdum Municipality recruitment scam. The arrest was made in Kolkata under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) after several hours of questioning by investigators.<\/p>\n
According to ED officials, Sujit Basu allegedly recommended nearly 150 candidates for jobs in the South Dumdum Municipality in exchange for financial benefits. The alleged irregularities reportedly took place between 2014 and 2016 during his tenure as vice-chairman of the municipality.<\/p>\n
Investigators claim that illegal appointments were made across multiple departments and that proceeds of crime were later used to acquire properties, including flats allegedly linked to the former minister. The ED has also identified suspicious cash deposits in bank accounts believed to be under his control.<\/p>\n
Sources associated with the investigation stated that the recruitment scam may extend beyond South Dumdum Municipality. Officials are reportedly probing irregular appointments across 17 municipalities in West Bengal, where nearly 1,000 employees are suspected to have been recruited unlawfully.<\/p>\n
Sujit Basu served as vice-chairman of South Dumdum Municipality from 2010 to 2021. He was also a senior leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and served as a minister in the West Bengal government. In the recent Assembly elections, he lost his seat to a BJP candidate by a margin of over 37,000 votes.<\/p>\n
The ED is continuing its investigation to trace financial transactions, alleged money laundering activities, and other individuals who may be connected to the recruitment scam.
