The ongoing student protests in New Delhi have begun to influence Maharashtra’s political landscape, with the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) stepping up its political engagement over the issue. Leaders of Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction), and the Indian National Congress have publicly expressed support for the student movement. Meanwhile, Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) chief Prakash Ambedkar has called for a statewide bandh in Maharashtra on July 23, urging broad public participation.

As political activity intensified, Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray and NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) chief Sharad Pawar visited Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to express solidarity with the protesting students. Both leaders described the movement as an issue linked to democratic rights and emphasized that the concerns raised by students deserve to be heard. They called for a transparent response from the authorities and stressed the importance of addressing the demands through dialogue.

In Mumbai, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray took charge of coordinating party-led programmes in support of the movement. Party workers organized demonstrations and outreach activities across different parts of the state, reflecting the opposition alliance’s effort to remain politically active on an issue that has attracted nationwide attention.

Prakash Ambedkar, while announcing the Maharashtra bandh, appealed to student organizations, social groups, trade unions, and civil society members to participate peacefully. He said the concerns raised by students should be treated with seriousness and urged the government to provide clear answers on the issues being highlighted. Political parties across the state have responded differently to the bandh call, with some extending direct support while others have chosen to organize separate programmes.

Political observers believe the student movement has provided the Maha Vikas Aghadi with an opportunity to present a united front. After months of focusing on different political issues independently, the alliance now appears to have found a common platform through which it can collectively challenge the government’s handling of matters related to students and education.

Prakash Ambedkar has previously called for statewide shutdowns, including after the Bhima Koregaon violence, when several parts of Maharashtra witnessed large-scale protests and isolated incidents of unrest. Drawing lessons from those events, the state administration has strengthened security arrangements ahead of the proposed bandh. Additional police personnel have been deployed in sensitive districts, and senior officials have been instructed to closely monitor developments to prevent any disturbance to public order.

Student organizations across Maharashtra have also increased their activities in recent days. Many groups continue to demand a fair and transparent investigation into the issues that triggered the protests, greater accountability within the examination system, and strict action against anyone found responsible for irregularities. Educational reforms and stronger safeguards for competitive examinations remain among the key demands being raised by students.

The bandh call has added a new political dimension to an issue that was initially driven by student concerns. Opposition parties are attempting to build public support around the movement, while the government continues to emphasize maintaining law and order alongside addressing legitimate concerns through appropriate administrative and legal processes.

The Maharashtra government has appealed to citizens to maintain peace and avoid spreading or believing unverified information.
