Bangladesh Issues Strong Warning Over Sheikh Hasina’s Possible Return, Says She Must Face Justice

Bangladesh's interim government says former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be subject to legal proceedings if she returns, with legal experts saying sentence review remains possible under the law.

Bangladesh’s interim government has issued a strong statement regarding the possible return of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, saying that if she returns to the country, she will have to face the legal process. Government officials stated that every citizen is equal before the law, and Sheikh Hasina would be required to appear before the courts to respond to the cases filed against her.

Government representatives also noted that under Bangladesh’s legal system, any punishment awarded by a court may be reviewed or appealed in accordance with existing laws. They emphasized that all legal proceedings would follow due process and the rule of law.

Senior government adviser Jahid Uddin Rahman said that Sheikh Hasina is facing allegations related to the violence and human rights issues that occurred during the 2024 anti-government protests. He stated that if the former prime minister maintains her position and returns to Bangladesh, she will be expected to cooperate with judicial proceedings.

The 78-year-old former prime minister left Bangladesh after widespread protests in August 2024 led to the collapse of her government. She subsequently traveled to India, where she has remained. In recent days, reports have suggested that Sheikh Hasina has been in contact with members of her Awami League party regarding preparations for her possible political activities.

The interim government reiterated that Sheikh Hasina, like any other citizen, will be treated according to the law. Officials said court decisions will be respected, and any future legal action will depend on judicial proceedings rather than political considerations. Legal experts also pointed out that Bangladesh’s judicial system provides mechanisms for appeals and sentence reviews where applicable.

Meanwhile, India has maintained its earlier position regarding Sheikh Hasina’s stay. New Delhi has stated that any decision concerning the matter will be taken in accordance with bilateral relations, diplomatic considerations, and applicable legal frameworks. India has not announced any new policy regarding her status.

Political analysts believe that if Sheikh Hasina returns to Bangladesh, it could become a significant development in the country’s political landscape. Her return may intensify political activity and increase tensions between the ruling authorities and the opposition, making the coming months crucial for Bangladesh’s political future.
