Understanding the States of Wakefulness and True Intelligence

This article explores the deeper understanding of intelligence beyond knowledge, the different states of consciousness, and the transformative power of silence and deep sleep in overcoming fear and worry.

Intelligence Versus Knowledge

Learning to drop the perceiver and perceive true intelligence allows direct experience rather than conceptual understanding. The brain typically uses thought, which is memory-based and limited, creating conflict. While knowledge is useful, intelligence encompasses the whole and enables transformation in the present moment. According to Lord Shiva, ‘Jnanam bandhanam’ or knowledge is bondage.

Four States of Consciousness

We experience the external world through our senses and mind in wakefulness. Dreams offer access to inward experiences, and deep sleep is free from desire. A fourth transcendent state exists beyond outward and inward awareness—pure silence. This fourth state transcends regular states of consciousness.

Wakefulness and Dreaming

Though dreams can feel as real as waking life, they represent only part of waking experience. Deep sleep marks the end of wakefulness. The dream state holds the power to end cycles of fear and worry through recognizing suppressed desires. By learning to end these cycles, one can relate to the world more intelligently.

The Power of Deep Silence and Meditation

Deep silence attained in meditation can help overcome fear by ending its continuity. Often, fears and worries persist because we do not know how to stop them, even carrying them into other lives. Remaining alert allows deep sleep to give the power to end these mental afflictions. Without this, wakefulness becomes clouded with ignorance.

A Parable on Dreaming and Intelligence

Mullah Nasiruddin once told his girlfriend about a dream in which he approached her with love letters. She replied that he was more intelligent in his dream than in waking life. This illustrates how the dream state can reflect unfulfilled desires and greater awareness than our waking moments, which are often chaotic and disconnected from silence.

Infatuation Versus Intelligence in Life

Currently, many relate to the world through infatuation with money, power, fame, and status, sacrificing themselves for these pursuits. This leads to a cheapening of life and unintelligent engagement with the world. Some appreciate and find joy in simple experiences, like rain, while others just suffer unpleasantly.
