The Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant, affirmed that the Supreme Court is accessible to every Indian citizen, highlighting the court’s openness amidst planned protests by the INDIA bloc against the Election Commission.
CJI Addresses Meeting Request
Justice Surya Kant stated he received a letter on Sunday from the INDIA bloc requesting a meeting and replied the same night explaining why he could not meet the delegation. Speaking to reporters after the NHRC’s 33rd Foundation Day event, he clarified his position.
Supreme Court Accessible to All Citizens
The Chief Justice emphasized that the Supreme Court’s doors remain open to all citizens, including elected representatives. He explained that any petition from any individual or member of an elected body is welcome, and the court will hear concerns and provide relief according to the law.
Judicial Approach Preferred over Administrative Route
Earlier, Justice Surya Kant refused the INDIA bloc leaders’ request to meet and submit a representation about alleged electoral irregularities. He advised that such issues, already sub judice, should be addressed through judicial proceedings rather than administrative submissions. A detailed explanation for this rejection was emailed to opposition leaders.
Opposition’s Planned Protest and Security Measures
The INDIA bloc, including the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, plans to march to the Supreme Court in protest over the Election Commission’s alleged irregularities. Security has been tightened in Central Delhi with barricades and deployed personnel from RAF, CRPF, and Delhi Police. Certain metro station entry and exit points will remain closed until 4:00 PM on October 12, 2026, to maintain order.
