Veda Vyasa, a great sage, sought to advance his son Shuka’s learning by arranging for King Janaka of Videha, a renowned scholar, to teach him.
Shuka’s Journey to Videha
Shuka traveled on foot to Videha and arrived at the city gates exhausted and thirsty. Despite his reputation and lineage, the guards ignored him, only offering a seat where he patiently waited for three days and nights without complaint.
Honors and Luxury
On the third day, Shuka was welcomed with great honors by ministers and court officials. He was given a luxurious room, fragrant baths, and fine clothes, which he accepted with calmness and serenity for eight days.
The Test in King Janaka’s Court
On the ninth day, Shuka was brought before King Janaka amidst music and dancers. The king challenged him to carry a full saucer of milk on his head and circle the hall seven times without spilling a drop. Shuka completed the task undisturbed and calm.
King Janaka’s Recognition
Impressed by Shuka’s equanimity through trials of neglect and luxury, King Janaka praised him, stating that his mind was not swayed by external circumstances. He acknowledged that Shuka had learned all that could be taught and advised him to return home and prosper.
