Kavita Kumari, a 27-year-old widow from Jharkhand, has inspired many with her determination to secure a steady job and a better future for her children. Despite lacking professional training or equipment, she ran 1,600 metres barefoot in a saree during a Home Guard recruitment trial.
Who is Kavita Kumari?
Kavita is a mother of two from Soso village in Ramgarh district. After losing her husband, Deepak Kumar Mahato, following a prolonged illness, she faced the challenge of supporting her family alone. With debts from her husband’s medical treatment, she took on various jobs, including labor at a brick kiln and working as a private security guard before focusing on the Home Guard recruitment opportunity.
The Home Guard Recruitment Challenge
Ramgarh’s Home Guard recruitment has 284 vacancies and over 16,000 applicants. Physical tests, including a 1,600-metre run, long jump, high jump, and shot put, precede the written exam. These tests take place between October 24 and November 5.
Determined Preparation
Without resources for coaching or gear, Kavita trained herself using YouTube videos and practiced running near her village before dawn. Her children helped operate the phone, as she was not familiar with its use.
Later, she connected with Ajay Karmali, who runs the HMT Physical Academy providing free training. This support helped her enhance her preparation.
The Viral Run
On October 4, at the Sidhu-Kanhu Stadium trial, Kavita arrived wearing a saree and slippers. She removed her slippers and completed the 1,600-metre run barefoot well within the 10-minute requirement, earning full marks.
Her performance was not just about the physical test—it became a symbol of hope and resilience, showing a mother fighting for her family’s future.
Community Support and Recognition
Following the viral video of her run, Dumri MLA Jairam Kumar Mahato sent Kavita a tracksuit and running shoes. This support allowed her to continue practicing with proper gear.
The Home Guard recruitment reserves 50% of posts for women, with 5% of those reserved for widows, highlighting the importance of this opportunity for Kavita.
