Swami Vivekananda shared a profound lesson he learned during his travels through the deserts of Western India. Over several days, he saw beautiful lakes that appeared real but vanished when he tried to approach them. This experience parallels today’s digital world where connections can seem vivid yet be illusory.
The Desert and the Mirage
While traveling on foot through the desert, Swami Vivekananda noticed lakes with trees surrounding them and their reflections in the water. Though every day he saw these lakes, he questioned why the region was still considered a desert.
After nearly a month, his thirst led him to approach one of these lakes, only to have it disappear as he drew near. This was the mirage he had read about but never fully understood. The next day, he again saw a lake, but this time, he recognized it as a mirage.
A Lesson for Today’s Digital World
Swami Vivekananda’s experience illustrates how illusions can seem real until genuine need reveals their emptiness. In modern times, social media and constant digital interaction create a similar illusion of deep connection with many friends and continuous updates.
However, these digital interactions can be superficial. A like, a story, or a brief message may appear to offer connection but often lack true emotional support. When someone deeply needs empathy or physical presence, the digital world can feel cold and empty—much like the vanished desert lakes.
Changing Perception, Not Reality
After realizing the lakes were mirages, the next day the lakes appeared again unchanged. What changed was Swami Vivekananda’s understanding. Similarly, modern technology will not disappear but multiply, offering undeniable benefits.
What is needed today is awareness—distinguishing between digital visibility and meaningful relationships. With this clarity, we can engage with technology wisely without being deceived by its illusions.
